When I was pregnant with my twins, I found myself unexpectedly facing an extended hospital stay. I learned a lot during this time. One of the most important things that I learned was what I needed to help me get through this time. Without having much else to do, I began to compile a list of essential things to get through the hospital stay.
Let's start with the essentials. You need personal hygiene items such as soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, a brush, toothbrush and toothpaste and lotion since hospitals can dry out your skin. Depending on your situation, you might want to bring shower gel, shaving cream, razors and your own towels. I have sensitive skin and learned quickly that the laundry detergent they used on the towels did not work for me. If you don't have to wear a hospital gown during your entire visit, bring comfortable pajamas or loungewear, and slippers or non-skid flip flops that can be removed easily. Don't forget clothes for the day you leave the hospital or you might find yourself wearing a hospital gown home.
Bring all your medications and a list of what medicines you are taking and why. You will have to answer question repeatedly about past surgeries, illnesses and allergies you have, so make a list so you can keep nurses and doctors aware of these things. You will need you health insurance card. Keep phone numbers and names of family members and friends handy. The hospital will need them in case of an emergency and you might need to call someone to help out with such things as watering your plants or bringing an item to the hospital.
Personalize your hospital room. If you have to be there for a long time, you might as well make it "homey". We brought family photos, a cd player, a small lamp that didn't put off a harsh fluorescent light, a quilt and pillow for my husband and my favorite blanket for my hospital bed. You will also need things to fill your time such as books, magazines, a journal (which I highly recommend), a craft project such as yarn and knitting needles, thank you cards or whatever else you like. It can be hard to be in a hospital for a long period of time, so bring whatever you can do to help you get through it. Be sure to check hospital policy before you bring anything into your room.
